Tidy Up Your Kitchen Cabinets in 5 Easy Steps

The kitchen is often said to be the center of a household. It’s where family members come together to prepare meals and spend enjoyable bonding time together. Right? Well, ideally.

If your kitchen is spacious and well-organized, using it is a joy. However, the kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home, it is no wonder it can easily end up messy.

Fumbling for the utensils you need when you’re in a hurry or having to dig all the way to the back of your cabinet to get that one ingredient that’s missing while you’re cooking is not only frustrating but it’s also less than time-efficient.

If this sounds familiar, here are the steps to tidying up your kitchen cabinets and making them both look and feel new.

Declutter above all

As you probably guessed, the first step is going to be thoroughly decluttering all your kitchen cabinets. Clutter is a more detrimental culprit than you would expect. Studies show that your stress levels may be in correlation with the amount of clutter that surrounds you.

Eliminating clutter not only makes the space more relaxing but also eliminates a great chunk of housework. Your cabinets will be easier to clean if there is less stuff in them.

You won’t keep procrastinating on wiping off dust if you don’t have to go through heaps of things, which takes hours.

So, remove everything from your cabinets and go through them. Have a trashcan ready and prepare a box where you will put things you can sell or donate.

Throw away old and broken things that have no use anyway. Get rid of food you’ve stored so long that it’s way past its expiration date.

If you have no use for some tools or appliances you bought or received as a gift a long time ago, say goodbye to them. Just like decluttering your home makes it feel bigger, decluttering your cabinets will make you realize that you have more space than you initially thought, too.

Clean your cabinets

When was the last time you properly cleaned out your cabinets? Many people probably can’t even answer this question.

However, now that you’ve removed everything from your kitchen cabinets, you can finally give them a good cleaning. First of all, use a vacuum to get rid of any loose dust or crumbs.

Your cabinets are probably not that dirty, so you don’t have to employ chemical cleaners for this task. This is not only better for the environment but it’s also better for you.

Simply mix vinegar with warm water in a 1-to-1 ratio and wipe down your cabinets with the mixture. After that, wipe it down once again with a cloth dampened with water, and finally, dry them off with a soft cloth.

If there are spots that require a bit more elbow grease, make a paste with baking soda and water and put the mixture on the surface for a few minutes. After that, simply wipe it off. You can also use a toothbrush for corners that are difficult to reach.

Create a system

Tidy Up Your Kitchen Cabinets in 5 Easy Steps 1

A well-organized kitchen is a functional kitchen. The next step is thus going to be crucial in setting you up for success. It’s time to create an organizational system for your kitchen cabinets.

Categorize items and assign them to cabinets. Think about how you use your kitchen to make this as practical as possible. For instance, it’s a good idea to put food and ingredients directly above your counter, so that you can easily grab what you need while preparing meals.

In the same way, you can put bulkier appliances right under the counter. You probably don’t use them every day, so you won’t have to constantly bend down to get them.

If you assign dishes to the cabinet above the dishwasher, you can put them away faster. It’s all about making things easy for you.

It’s also a good idea to make sure everything is visible. Putting ingredients in nice clear Mason jars will make it much easier to find what you’re looking for, and it also looks great and well-organized.

You will also always know what you’re running out of so you can restock. You can label the jars if you find it necessary, and can even write crucial cooking instructions on the labels.

Employ clever tricks and gadgets

Besides the Mason jar trick, there are lots of other ideas that can make your cabinet organization more practical. For instance, you can consider adjusting your shelf height to maximize the available space.

You might be able to squeeze in one more shelf, boosting the capacity of your cabinet. For smaller items, you can consider hanging wire baskets or hooks on the inside of your cabinet doors.

This way, everything will have its precise place.

Needless to say, handy items such as Lazy Susans can be a game-changer in lower cabinets.

You can forget about struggling to reach the back of the cabinet; simply turn the tray around and grab what you need effortlessly.

You can also use drawer organizer trays and plastic containers – whatever organizational tools fit your needs.

Revamp your cabinets from the outside

You’ve given a lot of love to the insides of your cabinets, but what about the outsides? If your cabinets are old or worn out, then your efforts at making your kitchen neat and organized might get undermined by their poor looks.

So, clean your cabinets on the outside as well, and evaluate if they need a pick-me-up.

Oftentimes, you can make a big impact by simply changing the hardware. Get new cabinet door handles and switch them out promptly. However, there is a lot more you can do for your cabinets.

For instance, you can make your kitchen look sleek and modern by adding reflective surfaces.

You can install Plexiglas sheets to your cabinets and make them look new. Just search for acrylic sheets by looking up plastic wholesale and pick from the many available colors. Alternatively, you can also refinish your cabinets if you have a free weekend.

A kitchen with subpar cabinets and a lack of organization in them is a nuisance at the moment but it can become increasingly frustrating if you don’t tackle it.

While it’s certainly a tedious task, it will greatly improve the way you use this space. Just make sure you stick to your system and always put everything back in its place!
